If you don’t, Harry Styles will help you figure it out.
It all began when large, mysterious posters with the words “DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE?” began appearing in major cities across the globe. Each poster had the letters “TPWK” at the bottom, which fans of Harry Styles would know is his slogan- Treat People With Kindness. Everyone was confused as to what these posters meant.
It wasn’t until 11pm on October 10th did fans of his realize that this was promo for a new song he was going to release at midnight. It was pure chaos as Harry made a sudden and unforeseen return with the first single of his album, Fine Line. The song was in fact, “Lights Up”.
Fans were shocked at the change of sound Harry came back with. Those of us who were expecting his familiar 70s pop rock style were met with a more modern pop style song, but not the annoying kind. The song starts off with a nice beat leading up Harry singing “What do you mean? I’m sorry by the way”. Those first two lines started the new era of Harry Styles, leaving fans to wonder just exactly what he meant. The main of the hook goes “Lights up and they know who you are, know who you are/ Do you know who you are?” Harry is questioning everything he knows, he is questioning himself.
The song was released with a video that shocked the eyes of many viewers. A bare chested Harry being touched and caressed by men and women alike. He seemed free while riding on the back of the motorcycle but so closed off when he was being groped by others. Listening to the song while watching the video left fans trying to decipher the meaning behind everything. With him shouting the lyrics “Shine, step into the light? Shine, so bright sometimes/ I’m not ever going back. Was Harry coming out? Was he saying he’s not going back to the constricted norms of the industry? One could only try to understand , but like Harry says, he likes to keep his music interpretation. So one can only hope he may one day tell us the meaning behind it.
Styles is back and better and we’re all ready for this new and free era of his.
